Application Statistics and University Spaces

Out of the 26 public universities, 23 have been inundated with applications, setting the stage for an expected enrollment of approximately 210,000 students in 2024. This figure aligns with the available spaces, constituting a total of 1.1 million enrollments across the tertiary institutions.

Modalities of Learning

A notable aspect of the anticipated student body is the diverse learning modalities. It is projected that 35% of the students will engage in distance learning, while the remaining 65% will pursue their studies on campus.

Department of Higher Education Preparations

The Department of Higher Education is actively overseeing the enrollment process, with plans in place to ensure a seamless academic year. In April 2024, the department will distribute enrollment templates to universities, closely monitoring their approved enrollment plans.

Registration Period and Oversight

For returning students, the registration window spans from 2 January to mid-February 2024, while first-time students will commence their registration from 3 January to 15 February 2024. The Department of Higher Education will employ a monitoring tool, consistent with the one used in 2023, to oversee the registration process.

Establishment of a Steering Committee

In a bid to enhance accountability, a steering committee will be formed, comprising representatives from the Department of Higher Education, the CAS directorate, universities, NSFAS, and student leaders. This committee will address registration-related matters and advise on mitigation strategies for potential risks that could impact the smooth progression of registration in 2024.

Key Dates and University Readiness Meetings

With the release of Matric results on 19 January 2024, first-time students can expect prompt notifications regarding their acceptance into their chosen universities. Registrars from universities will convene on 5 January to discuss the preparedness for the upcoming academic year, with a subsequent meeting involving security managers on 4 January to address potential threats during the registration period.

Late Applications and Inclusivity

In a move towards inclusivity, the Department revealed that only nine universities will entertain late applications and walk-ins. This offers a valuable opportunity for those who missed the initial application window to pursue higher education in 2024.

Preparing for 2024 Academic Year

To navigate the intricacies of the forthcoming academic year, prospective students are advised to consult the university academic calendar. This step will help them stay informed about crucial dates and events, ensuring a smooth transition into their academic journey in 2024.

In anticipation of 210,000 new students, South African universities implement measures for a seamless 2024 academic year, fostering inclusivity and addressing potential challenges through proactive planning and oversight.
