Status of Teacher Assistant Applications for PYEI Phase VI

As of the latest update, teacher assistant applications for Phase VI of the PYEI are not open. This phase extends the government’s efforts to combat youth unemployment, focusing on recruiting young individuals as teaching and general assistants in schools.

Extension of PYEI and Uncertainty in Program Inclusions

The PYEI, including the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI), witnessed its latest phase (Phase IV) during the end of 2023. Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced the extension of PYEI, but the specific programs, such as BEEI, eligible for this extension remain unclear.

Beware of Fake Messages Regarding Phase V Teacher Assistant Jobs

Rumors and fake messages have circulated about Phase V of the PYEI, claiming that applications for teacher assistant positions are open, with a proposed starting date in April. The Department of Basic Education clarified that this information is false and urged the public to be vigilant against fake news, emphasizing official communication channels for updates.

Application Process and Communication Channels

When new recruitment rounds are announced, applications for PYEI positions, including teacher assistants, must be submitted on the SAYouth.mobi site. This platform is free to use, requiring no data, and aims to reduce bias, non-compliance, and subjectivity in the application process.

Progress of Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI)

In the initial phases of BEEI, 320,000 young individuals were appointed as Education Assistants and General School Assistants in public schools nationwide. These individuals were trained for roles in teaching Home Languages, First Additional Languages, Mathematics, Business, Commerce, and Management (BCM).

The initiative progressed through Phase II (November 2021 to March 2022), Phase III (April 2022 to August 2022), and most recently, Phase IV (March 2023 to September 2023). Despite the initial goal of placing 255,000 youth employees, the initiative achieved a placement rate of 92%, employing a total of 235,939 youth in public schools across the country.

Conclusion

The Presidential Youth Employment Initiative addresses youth unemployment in South Africa’s Basic Education Sector. Stay informed through official channels for updates on future recruitment phases.
