Purpose Apprenticeship

The Level 1 apprenticeship program aims to provide candidates with a qualification and hands-on experience in the diesel mechanic trade. The selected apprentice will be responsible for repairing Trucks and Buses according to dealer/distributor’s standards and specifications under the guidance of the Service Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

Fault Diagnosis and Vehicle Servicing

  • Carry out fault diagnosis to aid and speed up vehicle servicing.
  • Utilize diagnostic equipment in vehicle examinations.
  • Ensure compliance with DCSA procedures and policies during repairs.
  • Provide accurate diagnosis to customers’ satisfaction.
  • Discuss matters with Service Advisors and offer clear explanations.

Vehicle Care and Safety

  • Co-operate in vehicle care and safety while dealing with vehicles.
  • Limit comebacks to a minimum.
  • Attend to breakdown calls as and when required.
  • Ensure vehicles are returned to customers in a neat, clean condition.

Parts Management

  • Sign for all parts at the parts department and use them on the relevant vehicle.
  • Return unused parts to the parts department.

Cost|Effective Solutions

  • Ensure diagnosis leads to the most cost-effective and accurate remedy for faults or customer complaints.
  • Provide advice or use techniques that ensure quality but save time.

Administrative Tasks

  • Complete forms and documentation included in the company’s service routine.
  • Draft and prepare any required reports.
  • Make suggestions and provide advice regarding any special promotional campaigns.

General Responsibilities

  • Keep overalls and work areas clean and tidy.
  • Submit complete job cards to the service advisor promptly.
  • Attend training courses provided by Daimler and Cargo Motors.
  • Assist with other reasonable requested duties as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

  • NQF Level 4 (Grade 12 or equivalent) – Maths and Physical Science.
  • N2 – Engineering Science, Technical Drawing, Maths, Diesel Trade Theory, or Level 2 Apprentice with Diesel Mechanic Trade knowledge.
  • Driver’s License.

Skills and Attributes

  • Good Interpersonal & Communication Skills.
  • Ability to operate under pressure and work in a team environment.
  • Attention to Detail.
