Bursaries For Masters and Doctorates at NWU 2023. Established on January 1, 2004, the North-West University (NWU) is a product of South Africa commitment to advancing higher education. It resulted from the merger of the University of North-West, Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, and the Sebokeng Campus of Black University, Vista.

NWU Masters And Doctoral Bursaries 2023

The NWU Postgraduate and Doctoral Bursary Program aim to support exceptional postgraduate and doctoral students lacking financial means for their education. Aligned with the university’s goals, the program seeks to recognize and reward academic excellence.

Masters Bursary

The NWU Master Bursary is a valuable opportunity for full-time master’s degree students. Eligible candidates receive an annual award of R28,800, while part-time students, considered as working, receive R14,400 per year. The bursary, spanning two years, amounts to a total of R57,600 for full-time students and half of that for part-time students.

To qualify, applicants must have attained a minimum average of 60% in all modules or subjects during their preceding Honours degree or postgraduate course. Second-year students should apply for the Master’s Progress Bursary.

Doctoral Bursary

NWU offers a Doctoral Bursary supporting both full-time and part-time doctoral students. Full-time students receive R31,000.00 per year, and part-time students receive R15,500.00 per year. The bursary, valid for three years, has a total value of R93,000.00 for full-time doctoral students.

Students may receive bursaries from multiple sources without limitations, but the university reserves the right to adjust or cancel the bursary if the annual cap of R261,900.00 is exceeded.

NWU Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, applicants must meet specific criteria:

  1. Both full-time and part-time students qualify.
  2. The bursary is for first-time, full prescribed postgraduate Masters or Doctoral degree programs.
  3. Students enrolled in occasional courses do not qualify.
  4. NWU students receive the Academic Merit Bursary automatically.
