Eskom announces first load | shedding of 2024 | with over 24,600MW capacity offline.Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned electricity utility, has declared the initiation of stage 2 and stage 3 load-shedding, marking the first instance of power cuts in 2024. The decision comes after a nearly three-week hiatus, attributing the necessity for load-shedding to setbacks in planned maintenance efforts.

Causes of Load | Shedding

Eskom cites the delay in bringing three generating units, with a potential 2,148MW capacity, back online as anticipated. Furthermore, unplanned losses of six generating units, totaling 3,113MW, have exacerbated the situation. Eskom reports that unplanned outages currently stand at 16,231MW, while 8,451MW of capacity is out of service for planned maintenance, resulting in a combined unavailable capacity of 24,682MW at the time of the statement.

Load|Shedding Schedule

As a response to these challenges, Eskom announces the implementation of stage 2 load-shedding from 05:00 until 16:00 on Tuesday. Following this, the power cuts will escalate to stage 3 load-shedding until 05:00 on Wednesday, January 3. Eskom emphasizes that this pattern of stage 2 load-shedding in the morning and stage 3 load-shedding in the evening will persist on a daily basis until further notice.

Future Capacity Restoration Efforts

Eskom’s teams are actively working to expedite the return of 4,921MW of generating capacity to service by the end of the week. This initiative aims to alleviate the strain on the power grid and mitigate the impact of load-shedding on consumers.

Anticipated Demand Increase

Adding to the complexity of the situation, Eskom anticipates a surge in demand in the coming days. The load forecast for the evening peak demand on Tuesday is projected to reach 23,011MW.

Load|Shedding Schedule Details

For the convenience of the public, Eskom provides a load-shedding schedule, detailing the planned power cuts starting from Tuesday, January 2, 2024. This schedule is subject to change based on the evolving circumstances.

Conclusion

Eskom’s announcement sheds light on the challenges faced by the utility, necessitating the implementation of load-shedding measures. The ongoing efforts to restore generating capacity underscore the importance of proactive measures to ensure a stable and reliable power supply in the region.
