Details of Load-Shedding

The power utility stated that it will implement Stage 2 load-shedding starting from 5 am on Tuesday until 4 pm. Following this, the rotational power cuts will escalate to Stage 3, continuing until 5 am on Wednesday.

Reasons for Load-Shedding

Eskom attributed the need for load-shedding to a setback in the return of three generating units (2,148MW) and the loss of six generating units (3,113MW). Additionally, an anticipated surge in electricity demand further necessitated the reintroduction of load-shedding.

Maintenance Efforts and Capacity Status

The setback was reportedly a result of intensified maintenance activities aimed at improving fleet performance. Eskom revealed that unplanned outages amounted to 16,231MW of generating capacity, while planned maintenance had 8,451MW out of service. Eskom’s teams are working tirelessly to bring 4,921MW of generating capacity back into service by the end of the week.

Load Forecast and Daily Pattern

The power utility provided a load forecast of 23,011MW for the evening peak demand on Tuesday. Eskom outlined a daily pattern of Stage 2 load-shedding in the morning and Stage 3 load-shedding in the evening until further notice. Continuous monitoring of the power system will be conducted, and any necessary changes will be communicated.

Appreciation and Call for Cooperation

Eskom expressed gratitude to those who practice electricity conservation by using it sparingly and efficiently. The utility encouraged actions such as switching off geysers and pool pumps from 5 pm to 9 pm to reduce demand and alleviate pressure on the power system, contributing to lower stages of load-shedding.

Return After Festive Season Reprieve

The announcement follows a period of reprieve during the December festive season when load-shedding was suspended continuously for 18 days, totaling 456 hours. Eskom highlighted that this was the longest period without load-shedding since May-June 2022.

Conclusion

As communicated, load-shedding is set to resume on Tuesday, marking the end of an 18-day hiatus during the festive season. Eskom emphasizes the ongoing efforts to address capacity issues and urges cooperation from the public in managing electricity consumption during this challenging period.
