How Much Is The New SRD Grant Payment?

How Much Is The New SRD Grant Payment?.  The Finance Minister recently announced changes to the SRD grant. Here’s everything you need to know.

Recently, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced an increase in the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, effective from 1 April. The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) currently pays R350 to approximately 9 million beneficiaries each month.

During the 2024 budget speech, Godongwana stated that improvements to the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant would be implemented by April 2024 within the current fiscal framework.

SRD Grant Increase

The SRD grant will now increase from R350 to R370 per month, a 5.7% increase. Godongwana described this as “the realization of the basic rights of our people.”

Payment Process

SRD grant payments are made during the final week of the month after Sassa completes verification checks. These checks, in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs, verify identity and citizenship, while bank details are shared with the Department of Treasury for income verification. Funds take about 2 to 3 working days to reflect in the recipient’s bank account after processing.

Budget Allocation

For the 2024 financial year, the SRD grant received a budgetary allocation of R33.6 billion, with provisional allocations for 2025 and 2026. This suggests the grant’s extension until March 2027 is possible, pending government decision.

Conclusion

The increase in the SRD grant payment signifies a tangible commitment by the South African government to support vulnerable segments of society. As beneficiaries await the implementation of these changes, the augmented allowance aims to alleviate financial burdens and uphold the basic rights of citizens in need.
