Power Cuts Resumed on Sunday

Despite the temporary reprieve, stage 1 power cuts will resume at 4 pm on Sunday until further notice, according to Eskom acting spokesperson Aubrey Sambo.

Lower Than Expected Electricity Demand

Aubrey Sambo explained that the decision to suspend load shedding was influenced by a lower-than-expected demand for electricity.

Schedule and Outlook

Eskom shared a schedule indicating that load shedding will remain suspended until 16:00 on Sunday, January 7, 2024. After this time, stage 1 load shedding will be implemented. The electricity provider plans to announce the outlook for the upcoming week on Sunday and will communicate any significant changes.

Successful Completion of Koeberg Nuclear Power Station Test

In other news, Eskom reported the successful completion of a full load rejection test on Unit 1 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station. This test, conducted in accordance with the South African Grid Code (SAGC) requirements, aimed to verify the unit’s ability to supply its auxiliary load and return to steady state conditions following a sudden disconnection from the national grid.

Steam Generator Replacement Activities on Unit 2

The positive outcome of the test serves as encouragement for Eskom’s plans to undertake similar steam generator replacement activities on Unit 2 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.

Koeberg Power Station Unit Updates

Eskom recently synchronized Unit 1 at the Koeberg Power Station with the grid after the longest outage in the station’s history. During this outage, three original steam generators were replaced with new ones. The initial plan was to bring Unit 1 back online by June 2023, but it faced multiple delays. Unit 2 is currently offline, undergoing a similar mechanical process to replace its steam generators. Each unit of Koeberg has the capacity to generate 900MW when operating optimally, equivalent to two load-shedding stages.

Conclusion

Eskom suspended load shedding due to lower demand until Sunday. Successful tests at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station are encouraging for future operations, signaling progress in addressing power generation challenges.
