Prioritized Areas of Interest

The Research Chair places emphasis on specific areas of interest when selecting beneficiaries, including the history of Southern Africa, digital humanities, and epistemologies.

Bursary Values

To provide a general guideline, the bursaries are granted at different values for different levels of study:

  • Masters of Arts (Full Funding): Approximately R167,000 per year for two years
  • Masters of Arts (Partial Funding): Approximately R100,000 per year for two years
  • Doctorate (Full Funding): Approximately R175,000 per year for three years
  • Doctorate (Partial Funding): Approximately R90,000 per year for three years
  • Postdoctoral Fellow (Full Funding): Approximately R200,000 per year, renewable for the second year upon satisfactory performance

Postgraduate Bursaries Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the UCT Archive and Public Culture bursary, applicants must meet specific criteria, including:

  • Successful completion of undergraduate education with a relevant degree
  • Pursuing a postgraduate qualification at UCT
  • Registration or intent to register at UCT
  • Attained at least 65% in undergraduate studies (minimum 75% for full funding)
  • Age restrictions for PhD (not exceeding 32 years) and MA (not exceeding 30 years) applicants
  • Eligibility for students applying for MAs by coursework and/or minor dissertation
