SANBI Student Bursaries 2024 for Biological Invasions. Established in 2004 in accordance with the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act, the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) operates under the Department of Environment, Forestry, and Fisheries. SANBI is dedicated to biodiversity research, information dissemination, and active involvement in biodiversity resource management. Its focus includes ecosystem rehabilitation and restoration, contributing significantly to the educational and recreational aspects of the National Botanical and Zoological gardens.

SANBI Biological Invasions Student Bursaries

SANBI invites students to apply for the Biological Invasion Bursary for the academic year 2024, supporting Honours, Masters, and Doctoral projects aligned with SANBI’s core focus areas. These areas encompass status reports, monitoring, incursion detection, response planning, risk analysis, eradication planning and coordination, and taxonomy. Successful candidates will actively contribute to research efforts addressing biological invasions.

Coverage and Scholarships

The bursary, conditional upon enrollment in an accredited university program, offers:

  • 1 scholarship for Honours studies (R60,000 + tuition fees).
  • 3 scholarships for Master’s studies (R115,000 + tuition fees each).
  • 4 scholarships for Doctoral studies (R161,000 + tuition fees each).

Funds may cover part-time study registration or operational costs for projects aligned with SANBI’s mission.

Bursaries Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must meet specific criteria, including South African citizenship, enrollment in a postgraduate program in approved research areas, and enthusiasm for biological invasion research.

How to Apply SANBI Student Bursaries

Bursaries Documents Required

Mandatory supporting documents include a certified ID copy, academic record, highest qualification copy or translation, comprehensive CV, two reference letters, a statement of support from a SANBI staff member, and a statement of support from a prospective academic supervisor. Honours applicants need to submit a project outline and a provisional acceptance letter from the university.

Bursaries Closing Date

The application deadline is 18 January 2024. Late submissions will not be considered. Ensure all documents are properly named, consolidated into a single PDF file, and adhere to the 11 MB email size limit.


SANBI retains the discretion to withhold bursaries if no eligible candidates are chosen. Shortlisted applicants will be notified within 28 working days post the closing date; non-communication implies an unsuccessful application.
