Sasmt Bursaries for 2024. Established in 1918 in Cape Town, the South African Society of Music Teachers (SASMT) holds the distinction of being the oldest professional music society in South Africa. Initially formed to support music educators at various educational institutions, the society has grown significantly over the years. Currently boasting more than 800 members, SASMT operates through eight ordinary centers and 33 institutional centers.

SASMT Bursaries and Scholarships 2021

SASMT offers a range of bursaries and scholarships to support students pursuing music studies in South Africa. These opportunities aim to promote and nurture talent across various musical disciplines.

David Reunert Bursary (R1500)

  • Granted to principal subjects such as singing or any performing arts
  • Open to those studying teaching or theoretical branches of music
  • Eligible applicants must be between 18 and 25 years old
  • National Senior Certificate or equivalent is required
  • Exclusive to students of current and paid-up members of SASMT
  • South African citizenship is a prerequisite

Ellie Marx Memorial Scholarship for String Instruments (R5000)

  • Designed to encourage students in the study of stringed instruments, specifically the violin
  • Available for both local and international music studies
  • Applicants must be South African citizens and members of SASMT

Gladwell Scholarship (R12000) | Kathleen Irish Scholarship (R12000)

  • Geared towards local or international music study at SASMT-accredited institutions
  • Amount disbursed in two installments, with the second contingent on academic performance
  • SASMT membership and South African citizenship are mandatory
  • Gladwell Scholarship is for the study of serious music (instrumental, vocal, or composition)
  • Kathleen Irish Scholarship supports financially needy piano students at tertiary level

  • Include certified copies of the following documents:
    • South African ID
    • Full academic record
    • Recommendations from two referees (one from the head of the department/institution)
    • Short curriculum vitae
    • Recent unedited DVD showcasing a performance with at least 3 contrasting works
    • Declaration by the teacher confirming the DVD’s authenticity
    • Digital photo (500 px in height)
