Registration Clarity Amidst Annual Concerns

Amidst the backdrop of annual student protests over registration challenges, the NSRC at Unisa has affirmed that all students should be able to register without impediments.

NSRC Statement and Assurance

In a statement, the NSRC emphasized its engagement with university management to address student concerns. They emphasized that no student should face registration or study barriers due to administrative issues, whether from the institution or NSFAS.

Extended Registration Deadline

Unisa’s registration for 2024 initially opened on January 10, with a deadline of February 13. However, the university extended the registration deadline for semester modules to February 16 and year modules to March 22.

Assistance for Students with Debt

Students with historical debt are encouraged to access an Acknowledgement of Debt (AOD) application to facilitate their registration for 2024. Immediate approval is granted for debts between R0 and R2000, while debts above that threshold are still considered by the university.

Addressing NSFAS Delays

The NSRC has highlighted the issue of delayed National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding decisions, which often delay student registration. They emphasized that Unisa should complete the registration of all previously funded students and ensure no student faces registration delays due to NSFAS issues.

Commitment to Student Support

In case of administrative issues, students are advised to seek assistance at a Unisa campus or center. The NSRC reiterated its commitment to ensuring a seamless registration process for every student, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Conclusion

The NSRC assurance underscores its dedication to ensuring that administrative challenges do not hinder students’ access to education. Their efforts aim to facilitate a smooth registration process for all Unisa students, enabling them to embark on their academic journeys without obstacles.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides financial assistance to students from poor and working-class backgrounds in the form of bursaries and loans. This funding is available to students studying at one of the 26 public universities or 50 TVET Colleges across the country.

Unisa is one of the universities where students can access NSFAS bursaries, which include allowances for student needs. However, the university has had to address false messages circulating about NSFAS allowances.

False Message Correction

A fake message recently circulated among students, claiming that NSFAS disbursements were delayed due to the absence of the DSF NSFAS manager, who was on leave until May 7, 2024. The message implied that payments could not be made without their authorization. Unisa responded to these rumors, clarifying that the message was fake and not issued by the university.

NSFAS Allowances Payment Update

Unisa confirmed that it has paid allowances to 149,348 students and continues to pay allowances as students update their banking details. Students are urged to activate their Unisa myLife email address to receive a link to update their banking details. Any queries can be directed to DSF-NSFAS@unisa.ac.za.

Students must receive the link from Unisa on their myLife email to update their banking details. Unisa has been paying NSFAS allowances since March 19, 2024.

UNISA NSFAS Allowances For 2024

NSFAS disclosed that 25 out of the country 26 universities have paid allowances to students. This followed an agreement made by the financial aid scheme, which saw institutions responsible for paying February NSFAS allowances.

While Unisa, along with other universities, will facilitate February and March NSFAS allowances, NSFAS confirmed a return to the direct payment method in April 2024. Students will need to register with the direct payment service providers previously assigned to their institutions.

UNISA Remittance Advice

To receive their NSFAS allowances, Unisa NSFAS students will receive remittance advice confirming the amount to be paid to them. This advice is a notification from the payer that payment for an invoice has been transmitted and will be received very soon. Once students receive their remittance advice, they will receive their allowances within 48 hours.

Conclusion

UNISA proactive approach in addressing misinformation and ensuring the smooth disbursement of NSFAS allowances underscores its commitment to supporting students in their academic pursuits. By clarifying the situation and providing guidance on updating banking details, Unisa aims to streamline the process, enabling students to focus on their studies without financial constraints.
